I am very involved with dog rescue - in fact I am a founding board member of a large and active rescue group that adopts 500 or more dogs per year while keeping very high standards with the placement standards. We (as a dog rescue) have used Canidae for years and recommended it to many adopters, but recently we (personally) have seen problems with our dogs', as well as dogs throughout the rescue, stools. Upon opening I could tell I made a mistake - smells like cardboard - my dog won't eat it no matter how I dress it up, much less could I get her to eat it plain. Plus, it has none of the science behind it like higher end brands like Royal Canine - the Newman brand is spreading itself too thin here - they should stick with pasta sauce.
Newman's own is a brand I totally trust and have bought snacks for my human baby as well for years. After a year on this food, my dog is doing fine, but I do notice a need to supplement with fish oil for a healthier coat.
I still use kibble because it's the fastest way to feed them a meal first thing in the morning before I let them out to go potty. So gross, but that's why we covered our couches in blankets that were easily washed. Which was fine, except that every 2-3 months or so he'd have stomach problems. After switching, his poops have been firmer, no stomach issues in sight, AND his coat has gotten glossier (and much less flaky).
Amazon has been excellent getting my shipments out on a timely manner. I'm very pleased with all my orders from Amazon. We tried pretty much every brand that you can buy in pet shops and always had problems with my dog scratching or having her ears get bright red. We found out the problem after one of the cases where she almost went into renal failure after eating her Milkbone treats. After a long investigation, I decided on Newman's Own, not only because there had been no recall on the food, but because of the ingredients, and that the proceeds going to charity. Now, choosing this brand would mean that I would have to order it online, because my local stores did not carry it, but that was all right with me, because not only do I enjoy online ordering, but I am an older, disabled woman, and getting to the store and hauling in packages is very hard for me. It seems to be the best combination of high-quality ingredients and reasonable price out there. I'm a big fan and recommend both to anyone. I adopted a rescue dog who had an allergy to corn. I checked every bag in local stores but all main fillers were corn.
It has been almost a year. My dog, Molly, is bouncy and healthy and almost allergy free. However, two out of my three dogs now consistently refuse to eat it. The only dog who will eat this new bag is the one who has been on a diet for two years and quite frankly, will eat anything. The dogs go nuts over it like a crack addiction! I am very happy that I have found a solution that is applicable to both dogs! Can't beat the price with S&S! Also love that they come in smaller resealable bags which keeps the food fresh.
