All About Chiffon Fabric

By Alex McFrye

Chiffon is a light-weight and finely woven textile renowned for its light shimmer. Its name comes from the French term for 'rag ' or 'cloth'. When held against the light, light passes very easily through it and gives it the impression of finely woven netting. Chiffon fabric is mainly utilised for formal gowns for it drapes itself elegantly on the base dress and provides it with a floating appeal. Upon weaving, fabric makers invariably dye and print on it.

Chiffon can be very tricky to work with. This is due to its slippery texture and the indisputable fact that it frays quite easily compared to other types of fabric.

We are able to typically divide chiffon into two classes based entirely on its underlying material: silk and manmade.

Silk is the best material to use when weaving chiffon because of its smooth texture and its shimmer. It's got a light and classy appearance to it, which is the reason why it is most often utilised for the overlay of wedding dresses. Gowns for debut parties are also ideal for chiffon. However , due to its light properties, it is very delicate and can tear if worn without necessary care. As such, silk chiffon is not recommended for day-to-day use.

Chiffon fabric made from manmade materials is much common and less expensive to supply. Materials like rayon and polyester are often used for this purpose. One outstanding quality of synthetic chiffon is its durability. In fact , one can put it in gentle mode in the washer, although machine drying and dry cleaning are not advised. Garments made of synthesised chiffon are also much simpler to store and are typically used for items like scarves, shawls, underwear, and blouse overlays.

Quite often, silk and manmade materials are mixed together to use their various quality advantages. The addition of manmade materials strengthen silk chiffon without reducing the glimmer significantly, while the cost goes down to accommodate those with lower budgets.
