Hence it must be blended well. I recommend using a sprayer or something to add a fine layer of vegetable oil to prevent sticking. While it was working, it was great. The temperature settings are the best feature by far, but, I used this just under a month and was so pleased with everything I had dehydrated to that point. So I decided to give this do it at home thing a try. I have never seen beef jerky made nor made it myself. It is tasty and easier. I recommend putting wax paper in between each slice which makes it a bit more trouble but is worth it. I have dried mushrooms, tomatoes, strawberries, oh so fast! All racks dry at the same rate.
So, bottom line, I really liked the FD-75PR but am heartbroken that it died so quickly. And, I am extremely disappointed that I didn't get that replacement in a timely manner too.
You could get away without tray rotation in the Nesco, although I still do it. The Nesco is easily twice as fast at drying, maybe three times as fast, than the Ronco, although it still, of course, takes longer than you'd think.
You can use other spices that you like. I made meringue cookies, tossed in a few mini choc chips, made little dollops & set machine on 160 degrees; I couldn't resist eating them warm-they tasted like smores. You have a high end toasted snack that makes a great Christmas gift along with the jerky & apple crisps. Also tried cinnamon & Splenda on the pecans, which was fantastic (reminded me of a $5 cone of pecans/cinnamon/sugar we bought in Branson at a show, but much healthier). Variable temp lets you dry delicate foods without harming nutrients. It dries contents fairly evenly from top to bottom of tray stack. I would buy again. I bought this to replace my Ronco model FD1005WHGEN 5-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator.
If you make it thicker (add more puree) it won't crack after it's dried and then peels up easy for storage. This is one of those items that does exactly what it says it's going to do and does it without a fuss. It's simple to use (even I haven't screwed up anything with it yet) and works extremely well. I recommend this for anyone who likes to cook by using intense flavors - I have used the dried tomatoes on salads, in sauces, casseroles, etc. It is worth it if you're just doing tomatoes. We were overloaded with tomatoes and hot peppers this summer, and I was so glad to have this. May try jerky this winter when the hunters in the family have too much venison.
