Although there is no official estimate of how many people live in the area, it is estimated that there are approximately 35,000 to 70,000, who live in small villages dotting the region. Known as the "running people," the local peoples have been known to travel long distances along mountain trails.

The native peoples are semi-nomadic and live in the cooler forested areas during summer months and migrate to the canyons during the winter months, taking advantage of the changing seasonal temperatures. Often, you can find native villages that retain their cultural heritage, since they choose to live in places away from larger cities. One popular form of entertainment for the local people is a community race called which is played by kicking a ball on canyon pathways. While many native villages welcome tourists and the opportunity to educate visitors, they are careful to retain their cultural heritage and traditional ways.
