A Guide To The Family Road Trip - And Surviving The Little Hellions Joining You For The Ride

By Clifford Gill

Travel is increasing on a yearly basis, according to the U.S. Department of Energy - and this year, the roads will be littered with more vehicles on their travel routes. While family travel may be a great bonding experience, it can also be a pain in the you-know-where. Here are just a few quick and easy tips you could use to make your vacation fun, amusing and stress-free!

End the ennui with some infantile entertainment. You've heard it all before. And whenever a child asks "are we there yet?", you sometimes wish you'd hear fingers on a chalkboard instead. The good old fashioned car games from our childhood are still alive, thankfully. Some of these games include immortals such as the license plate game, the Punchbuggy game, "I Spy" and magnetic board games like Snakes and Ladders - and if your kids just miss them gadgets, let them bring their PSPs, if only to keep them from asking if you are there yet.

Stop smart. When stopping at rest stops, make sure it's just your kids getting back in the car and not the bacteria and germs they pick up in the bathroom. Bring products that keep your family healthy, such as hand sanitizer and Lysol Disinfectant Spray, to kill rest stop germs that can be transferred from the rest room to the surfaces in your car. To prepare for those inevitable spills and "oops" moments, keep paper towels or wet wipes handy.

Proper choice of meals and snacks. Sure, you can stop at the rest stop for food-along with the thousands of other people on the road. But do not mistake your average greasy spoon for classy, healthy French dining at the Riviera. Instead, you can just nosh away in the comfort of your automobile, as pure, distilled water, as well as snacks like string cheese, fruit roll-ups, carrot sticks and fresh fruit are all wonderful alternatives - and don't forget the trail mix! These snacks provide healthy alternatives for everybody in general and don't taste too bad either, wouldn't you agree?

Keep everyone happy. Pick a destination that has fun activities for all ages. While it's tempting to head for the place that the kids will love, make sure there's something for mom, dad and grandma to do as well. Of course you can include Disneyland and Disneyworld, but other great places to visit in the United States include Hershey, PA, Williamsburg, VA and Yellowstone National Park.

Family vacations can give you equal parts headaches and happiness. And if you keep these tips in mind, you can help ensure safe and happy travels-at least until you get there.
