Women Wear Costumes, Men Wear Halloween Shirts

By Clinton Mills

Every Halloween party season, you see new costumes springing up as different trends become popular. When "The Dark Knight" came out, there was an army of Jokers marching on the party scene. When the now infamous Billy Mays passed away, we saw hundreds of blue-shirted and excitable salesmen all over. Halloween costumes have always been topical, but there are some standbys that show up year after year, and it usually seems to be the ladies who fall back on the more traditional costumes.

1. Many young women think that a kitty-cat costume is the purrfect choice for the occasion. Little cat ears, whiskers, a tail, and minimal face paint makes this a fairly simple costume to pull off. It also lends itself to much interpretation since there are so many ways to pull off the "naughty kitty-cat" costume.

2. Naughty nurses have a way of putting many young men in cardiac arrest each year. Perhaps it's those silky stockings that sends folks over the edge, or perhaps it's the reassurance that someone will have the credentials to handle any medical emergencies at the party.

3. I would imagine that if God were to send down an angel to interact with mere mortals, then it wouldn't be dressed in a low-cut, see-through teddy and high heels. Of course, I'm not God so I really don't know what He would send as His earthly representation.

4. Halloween t-shirts have slowly been replacing the art of costuming during Halloween. While some purists may hate this, the Halloween tee is comfortable and versatile and requires little preparation time, if any. Plus, with the upswing in humorous shirts being worn, there are far more laughs than screams.

5. The wicked witch has changed the meaning of the word "wicked" for many of us in recent years. Not too long ago, that wickedness was spawned from burning poor scarecrows alive and being cruel to Scottish terriers. Now, they get their wickedness from low-cut tops and black stockings. That's a spell I'd like put on me any time of the year.

Halloween is a good time for all, but it's been growing in attendance amongst adults every year. Halloween fashion may be overtaking the costumes in common usage, but that doesn't mean that the spirit of Halloween is dampened...in fact, those spirits may be more restless than ever.
