The Best General Travel Advice

By Jason K Maison

Taking a family vacation is a great time to bond, but long travel times can make even the most patient children antsy. This can lead to unnecessary bickering and a damper on the family fun. This article will help ease some of the travel-time tension by giving you some ideas to keep your children entertained throughout the whole trip.

Pay attention to hidden fees when booking airline travel. It is becoming commonplace to charge fees for checked baggage, especially overweight baggage. In addition, airlines now charge fees for checking in at the terminal instead of online, and may even charge extra to select a more coveted seat on the airplane, such as exit row seating.

If you plan to hit the road with a small child, take breaks every two or three hours on the road. Breaks can offer the opportunity to use the bathroom and stretch your legs. Getting a small child out of the car occasionally can also help to prevent motion sickness. Your trip may become a little longer, but the reduced stress will be worth any delay.

When staying at a hotel that offers a digital alarm clock, check both the time and the alarm when you first arrive. It is a common prank to pre-set the alarm to extremely early times, or to fiddle with the time displayed on the clock. Late at night when you go to bed, you may not realize your clock is 30 minutes fast or slow.

Never keep all your spending methods (cash, credit cards, checks, etc) in one place. If that item is lost or stolen, you will still need access to money. Keep the items you'll need for the day in a wallet or purse and store the rest in a secure place, like a piece of luggage with a lock or a false bottom.

Bring Ziploc bags for your liquids and toiletries to minimize time in airport security lines. Bring a few extra in case companions have forgotten theirs or yours have torn. You may also find that they serve other uses on your trip and can be invaluable when readily available. They are also a good way to carry small items and make them easy to view and find.

Remember to get blankets and pillows right when you get on the plane, after the plane is full, all the blankets and pillows are usually taken. This will help keep you comfortable on the flight and reduce your stress afterward. Sometimes the simplest of things can make a big difference in your travel plans.

If you're traveling to a country where you're likely to want to enjoy a bottle of wine, bring along your own corkscrew. If you don't know the area or speak the language, tracking down a corkscrew just for that impromptu picnic can turn a relaxing afternoon into a harried scavenger hunt.

If you are interested in traveling comfortably on your vacation, don't be afraid to upgrade your seat. Most airlines are combining traditional business class and coach seats by offering "premium economy" options. They have larger seats and better legroom, but they often do not cost as much. You can also try to upgrade your seat just before boarding, but you won't know about the availability of the upgrades if you check in to your flight online.
