Basic Things Regarding MK 262 Mod 1 Ammo

By Rebekah Alford

Prior to the use of military equipment for civilians, a period of twenty to thirty years can pass and MK 262 Mod 1 ammo can be a good example. The original pieces were designed for the military and the main platform for use was M16. There are no major differences between the original military products and the ones meant for civilian use, as they can be found in boxes and they have a good accuracy and performance. Used by NATO, a reliable battle pack could not exist without the projectiles.

Over time, the M16 platform has been modified and was made with 18 inch barrels. Both, the name and the configuration of the rifle were modified. Mod 0 was introduced in 2002, but only with one cannelure and it was transformed into Mod 1 in 2003. The temperature sensitivity became better in 2005. Using OTM (open-tipped match) as type of projectile, the expanding process is made differently than normal. In many cases the hollow cavity is meant for expansion, but for the current model, the accuracy is improved due to the stabilization of the projectile in flight.

When the projectile gets in a soft tissue, the heavier base causes it to yaw, or tumble. The hollow nose cone and the fragments from the cannelure can break off. The fragmentation can create a fast energy transfer and generate considerable wounding effects. The first products that appeared on the market were actually released in the form of cosmetic blemishes and sold in bulk.

The imperfections and scratches were invisible to the naked eyes of clients. However, even if the imperfections are unnoticeable, they could affect accuracy, terminal performance and wind drift, at long range. In ideal conditions, the penetration of a projectile could be of fifteen to twenty inches inside a soft tissue.

The fragmentation effect can be determined by velocity and the barrel length. In some cases, the projectile has proven not to be very effective for incapacitating the target, due to low probability of fragmentation. MK 262 is manufactured by Black Hills Ammunition and was designed initially for SPR, which means Special Purpose Rifle. The bullet used is a 77 grain Sierra Match-King. At long ranges, the bullets better than the ordinary M855.

As some sources say, a target could be killed from seven hundred meters with the bullet. The first sign of serious yaw in tissues was seen at three hundred meters, according to ballistic tests. The bullet type is preferred by many operators from Special Force, because of its superior accuracy, capacity of causing wounds, stopping power and range power.

With a barrel of twenty inches, the muzzle velocity can be of 2750. The projectiles can be found in boxes that each has fifty rounds. One dollar is the normal prince for every round, but the products are not easy to find.

MK 262 Mod 1 is a type of bullet used for sniper rifles and works very well in M16 platforms. In comparison to the standard M855, the projectile is improved and is good especially in long ranges. The main advantages of using the rare product are accuracy, performance, wounding capacity, range power and stopping power.
