3 Great Caribbean Holiday Activities

By Ian Smith

This article examines some things you might consider on a holiday in the Caribbean. As you'd realise from what has become Jamaica's top music extravaganza, Sumfest is one of the best reggae shows in the world. If you are expecting some kind of orgy on the beach with wild music and bonfires, then you'll possibly be disappointed for it's a fa series of concerts and sound system jams lasting over four days. But if you have an interest in listening to the most up to date names in Jamaican music from past days and right now, with a few global R&B or hip-hop acts thrown in as a bonus, then you are in for a serious treat.

It's best to get to Montego Bay a week or so before the event which is held in late July or early August and get yourself to the beach to rid yourself of that fresh off the aeroplane pallor, and to attend pre-festival events which are composed of the Blast-Off party on the beach on the Sunday before the festival starts, and the Monday street Party with DJs and outdoor jams. After the festival begins, the stage shows start late in the evening, going on until dawn and involve some heavy audience participation, or shortage of it, if someone doesn't please the famously fickle local crowd. And it's doubtful you'll get a bigger adrenaline rush than just being here, stars shining overhead on a warm night with the music echoing out over the bay.

Second if you're a foodie then forget diets, and trawl the narrow streets of Old San Juan for a day, and you will understand why Puerto Ricans are passionate about food. Start your day with breakfast at the 1960s diner Cafeteria Mallorca, where cool baristas pour boiling hot coffee from very old steel machines, and toast mallorcas, delicious pastries jam packed with ham and cheese, dusted with sugared icing.

At about mid-day the side streets waft with the amazing scents of cocina criol-la, the eclectic mix of Caribbean and Spanish influences at the epicentre of Puerto Rican food. Cosy cafes such as El Jibarito knock out big helpings of mofongo, a mix of mashed plantains, garlic, herbs and chicken, served with beans and rice. As the heat rises, slake your thirst with a piragua, a mound of flavoured ice, or gorge on deep-fried bacalaitos, cod fritters, as you lounge on bench in the shade overlooking the quay. When night falls, dress up and get involved in the crowds in SoFo, where hip restaurants offer artsy decor and delicious food to San Juan's jet set.

Otherwise what about shrimp BBQ and rum punch on the beach on Nevis

There is a place called Sunshine's Bar and BBQ which you may well not notice on Pinney's Beach, because it seems to be pretty nondescript and has only 2 not very nice tables outside on the beach. Ignore it at your peril as it serves an awesome rum punch called killer bee, and spicy charred shrimp you won't find anywhere else, and after that it just won't matter. Two words of warning, the first is to sip the rum concoction slowly, and the second is to sit if you can with your feet in the sea, because when the red hot spices hit you you'll have to be as cool as possible. The deadly combination of the shrimp straight off the BBQ the humidity and the spices will batter your senses and you'll be grateful you continue to have ice cold rum punch left to counterbalance this.
