AK-47 Tactical Accessories For The Peoples Gun

By Casandra Newton

Known fondly as 'the people's gun', the Russian-built AK-47 is an antique compared to the carbon and plastic assault rifles deployed in the British and American armies today. It lacks accuracy and sophistication. Its simplicity may be what drives its popularity. Easy and cheap to manufacture, it as only eight moving parts. It is so easy to use that a child can put down 650 rounds per minute with only basic instruction. It should come as no surprise that AK-47 tactical accessories are readily available on an internationally popular shopping website that is itself a household name.

The AK-47 was built by the Russians during World War II. Today, there are anywhere between 50 million and 70 million Kalashnikov rifles distributed all over the world. It is the most widespread military weapon in the world.

It is actually quite true that supplementary items for this weapon are available online. A search of a well-known website for 'AK-47 Tactical Accessories', yielded nearly 2,000 results. Along with buffer tubes, buttstocks and handguards were a toy pump action soft bullet fire AK-47 and an AK-47 water pistol. It is, as yet, not possible to purchase the firearm itself through this means.

It is also simple child's play to break down and clean the weapon. The AK-47 can be stripped in less than 60 seconds and cleaned in almost any ambient climatic atmosphere. It will continue to fire even if it has not been recently cleaned, that's how feisty and robust it is. The same cannot be said for more modern weaponry.

Reducing the online search to simply, 'AK-47' produces pages and pages of books, gadgets and toys, including a three-dimensional ice tray where the cubes come out shaped like bullets. The tray itself is actually shaped like the signature curved ammunition magazine. The operating instructions for a more recent Kalashnikov rifle are out in paperback. It is hardly any wonder that the iconic rifle is as much a household name as a popular cola soft drink.

The name of the weapon is itself woven into modern lexicon. After all, AK-47 is a lot easier to remember than Scharfschutzengewehr 69. The 'A' in AK-47 stands for the type of weapon, automatic, which is avtomat in its native Russian. The 'K' stands for the initial letter of the surname of its inventor, General Mikhail Kalashnikov. The Russian colloquialism for the weapon is 'Kalash'.

How weird is it that, while there are three binding global agreements governing the banana trade, as well as one non-binding agreement (the International Plant Protection Convention), yet there is not even one legally binding global agreement governing the arms trade.

Whatever your feelings about guns and ammo, the AK-47 won't be disappearing any time soon. It's cheap, it's robust and easy to find parts. It has seen action in World War II, Afghanistan and Mogadishu. It has seen the collapse of the Soviet Union and been a player in the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the United Kingdom, Klashnikov vodka has recently been introduced.
