Experiment with some of Cyprus' high quality delicacies

By Kourtney Feldker

Cyprus - a place for true food lovers

A visit to the finest island in the Mediterranean gives you the opportunity to experience a wide range of incredible cuisine, so be sure to spend some of your time in the many Cyprus restaurants and not just on the beach. As you'd expect for an island surrounded by clear blue sea, you'll be able to order incredibly fresh fish that could well have been swimming free that very morning. Add in a spectacular array of fresh vegetables picked up daily from the market and you'll be amazed how good this simply prepared food can taste.

A whole new way of eating

Cyprus is pretty much self-sustaining thanks to the quality of produce provided by the local farmers and very little food needs to be sourced elsewhere and brought onto the island. Fruit, vegetables, meat and fish are all traded and sold every morning, picked up by chefs with a keen eye for quality who want to create meals that are unlike anything else you've tasted. You're encouraged to take your time and to work your way through your dinner slowly - it's a social occasion, so celebrate your food and friends, relax and enjoy the evening.

The best way to get a true taste for the vast range of food you can get on the island is to try out the traditional Cypriot meze. This is one of those 'little bit of everything' meals where diners get to taste a huge amount of different platters. The variety is near endless, from lightly grilled squid or octopus splashed with a zingy burst of lemon, to succulent meatballs doused in tasty, spicy sauces.

An array of choice that can't be beaten

You'll also be able to indulge in local cheeses including delicious halloumi that is thickly sliced then grilled or fried to perfection. Dolmades are grapevine leaves stuffed with rice, lamb and herbs, and are a local favourite that simply must be tasted to be believed - you may have tried them if you've ever been to Greece. A look down the menu of any taverna or restaurant will reveal countless new tastes for you to try out, so don't be afraid to experiment.

Choosing where you will eat is, of course, very important - so if you're looking for a truly unique dining experience, why not book a table at a restaurant that is part of one of the beautiful boutique hotels that are found throughout the island? You know then that not only will the food itself be marvellous, but you'll also get top quality service set in breathtaking surroundings. It's the best way to ensure a memorable evening for all involved and is the perfect way to round off your week or two in the sun.
