Your Two Top Options For Digital Photo Printer

By Brendon Johanson

The first step in getting to the best digital photo printer is to identify your unique printing needs. Different buyers have different printing requirements so what may be the best digital photo printer for your neighbor may not be the best option for you.

There are mainly two types of digital photo printers. The first being the inkjet type and the other one is called dye sublimation or in short the dye sub printer. If you are buying for home use then it is better to buy the former. This is because inkjet printers can print documents as well, whereas dye sub printers are specially designed for digital photo printing only.

These two types differ in their technology. While Inkjet printers use a dithering procedure involving the used of different sized dots in multiple layers on the paper, the dye sub printers on the other hand use a strip of colors - cyan, magenta, yellow and key tones. The ribbon gets heated by a thermal head which produces a sublimated ink gas. This gets transformed into the printing medium. This technology is often called the continuous tome technology.

In some cases, the inkjet printer cannot attain enough saturation when printing some photos. There are also other disadvantages like chances of colors getting smudged. The color may also get faded with time and exposure to light. Also if you are not using the printer regularly there are chances of the color going dry. Do not think that inkjet printers do not come with any advantages. The biggest advantage is that you can use the same printer to print your word documents and presentations. You will get a large variety of portable models in inkjet printers which is again a huge plus point.

A lot of professional photographers prefer the dye sub printers. It gives constant and smooth color with accurate saturation. It also gives a thin transparent film over the color which prevents the photo from fading. There is no chance of color getting dried out in dye sub printers. However dye sub printers can only print photos. If you think of multipurpose use then this is not an option.

As we know that with technologies come with its set of limitations. Both technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages. Your choice of digital photo printers will depend greatly on how you will use it.

The best photo printer for commercial use is the dye sub printers. However the inkjet technology is rapidly innovating, incorporating into its technology all the best that the dye sub can offer that there are already high-end inkjets which are deemed to be as equally good as their dye subs counterparts. This is primarily the reason why it is best to compare different models from different brands and to continually check any latest update on the digital photo printers technology.
