Movement sensor works completely at dark conditions. So they had been off and on while you were reaching in to grab things. It truly is a nice light and it is a shame the maker did not put a bit more work into making this much more weather resistant. It does not have very good mounting choices. The previous ones would sense you several inches from them and switch on, but that also turned them off.
I used the hang opening for a nail on mine.

I had been skeptical after getting a few other "motion sensor pucks" that didnt trip unless you were right below them (dragon light). This one works from the very first time I installed it. I can see myself running through batteries fairly quick. You use double-sided tape or a hook and loop goes right over battery accessibility door and the "hole" for hanging on the nail or screw is ineffective. The motion sensor outdoor lighting will be good where it is and it serves it purpose, however I wish it were brighter. Have to say though the vendor contacted me and was extremely apologetic. Also, it does not know the distinction between night and day, so it activates every time there's motion around the door. She set up it herself without any difficulty. I just read some negative critiques, but most had been positive.
Additional light to an extremely dark part of our yard. I've got a couple of nit-picks, though. Paid for four movement sensor units that I expected to light when I am four to five feet away. One shining up or down the entire staircase kept shining in your eyes, either at the end or the top. Wound up liking them so much I just purchased two more for additional closets. Sensitivity is nice.
These lighting is great for dark closets. Super easy to set up. My closets are just three feet wide by four feet deep and perhaps eight feet tall.
Quality is okay for a sub $30 detector.
Once I put the batteries in I sealed battery door shut with Dap Seal 'N Peel Detachable Caulk so ideally that will keep moisture from getting into.
This contemporary outdoor lighting unit does the job of lighting the steps for thirty seconds - perhaps too well.
