The Best Snorkeling Spots In The Waters Of The Cayman Islands

By Grant Ceville

Snorkeling enthusiasts and those seeking a new underwater adventure are drawn to the calm crystal blue waters of the Cayman Islands. The idyllic conditions and unique underwater features make the islands waters a perfect choice for a snorkeling vacation. Ship wrecks, corral reefs and other underwater formations create the perfect haven for a wide variety of tropical marine life that makes snorkeling in these areas highly rewarding. If you are planning a trip soon these are some of the best locations for snorkeling in the Cayman Islands.

Seven Mile Beach is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to the islands for many reasons. A number of large resorts are located along the shore in this part of the island. The beach area is overflowing with dinning and shopping. All of these features make this area a very convenient place to plan your snorkeling vacation. Developers likely choose this spot because of the shallow waters and several stunning coral reefs located just off shore. Just north of seven mile beach is Cemetery reef. The beach that provides access to the reef is a public beach. Snorkelers exploring cemetery reef have spotted parrotfish and schools of other tropical fish. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a reef shark.

Ship wrecks often draw snorkelers not only because of their historical allure but after years at the bottom of the ocean these wrecks become homes for many different kinds of marine life. There are two very popular shipwrecks that are often visited by snorkelers in the Cayman Islands. The waters off Cayman Brac are home to a Russian ship known as The Wreck of Captain Keith Tibbetts. Perhaps the most popular shipwreck is The Wreck of the Cali. The Cali was a British schooner that was built in 1944. While some wrecks occur by accident, this ship made its way to the bottom of the sea by order of the British government. The two hundred seventeen foot ship was considered a hazard in 1957 and was sunk of the shores of George Town by the British Corps of Army Engineers. The shallow water the ship sits in makes it a great spot for snorkelers.

Bloody Bay Wall is a shallow water snorkeling location located just off the shore of Little Cayman. Other notable sites in the waters off the smallest of the three Cayman Islands include Nancy's Cup of Tea and perhaps the most popular location in the waters of the small island, Jackson Point. The waters of the largest island, Grand Cayman, are the location for The Devil's Grotto. This complex group of underwater tunnels gives experienced snorkelers and divers a unique experience. One hundred forty eight feet off the end of Eden Rock divers and snorkelers can begin exploring in shallow waters only around ten feet deep. This popular spot is home to a number of marine creatures and is often used as a resting place for large Tarpon during the day.

Whether you are an experienced diver or just trying out snorkeling for the first time the waters of the Cayman Islands will have plenty to delight and entertain you.
