Determining what is Wrong with Your Hygrometer

By Drew Danson

Your cigar humidor is a very important piece of equipment when it comes to taking proper care of your cigars. After all, if you cannot store and age your cigars properly, you will not be able to enjoy their fullest flavor. However, there are a few things that can go wrong with your cigar humidor, and from time to time, you will have to troubleshoot what could be the issue. Consider the hygrometer. This is an important piece of equipment since it will allow you to make sure that your cigars are being stored at the proper humidity.

If you have cigar accessories that are not working properly, you need to know how to troubleshoot them. To start with, take a look at the humidor. Does it seem to have a problem? There are a few things that can actually go wrong with a humidor, and you will need to be able to troubleshoot each. One thing has to do with the hygrometer. Hygrometers can easily lose calibration, and that can cause problems. If you know how to properly troubleshoot and calibrate the hygrometer, then you can save yourself a good deal of trouble. The first thing you need to know is what type of hygrometer you have. It will either be digital or analog and your troubleshooting process will differ accordingly.

If you have a digital hygrometer, you will need salt, distilled water, a small plastic container, and a baggie. Create a mixture of salt and water that is very thick, almost like a paste. You should put that mixture in the small container, and then put the container along with the hygrometer into the baggie. Leave this sitting for a full day to two days. The hygrometer should read 75%. If it does not, you can just calibrate it so that it will function properly.

If you have a digital hygrometer for your humidor, you will need to handle the process a little differently. You will need the following items: a plastic bag, a small open container, salt and water. You will need to mix salt and water to a thick consistency in the small open container. Then, put both the hygrometer and the container in a sealed plastic bag. After a full day, the hygrometer should give you a reading of 75%. If it does not, it has lost calibration and you just need to readjust it to 75%.

Making sure your cigars are able to properly age means making sure that your cigar humidor is functioning correctly. Doing so means being able to troubleshoot any issue that could arise, like a mis-calibrated hygrometer. You can easily learn to troubleshoot and recalibrate your hygrometer so you will not continue to have any humidity reading trouble in your cigar humidor.
