Quick Guide to Grass - The Real Thing vs. The Fake

By Fernando Petite

You need a new lawn at your business or your home, but how do you choose between the real thing and synthetic grass? Not too many years ago, everyone knew that there was no substitute for the soft, green beauty of real grass. Today, that statement is not always true. Commercial landscapers are now turning to synthetic varieties of grass, and this is becoming a trend with homeowners as well. If you need to decide on the best lawn for your home or business, you have to consider the differences between your two options.

Appearances

If you buy a high quality fake grass, you should not be able to tell the difference going off of appearances alone. When standing at a distance or on the edge of the grass, you should look out and see a beautiful field of bright green, healthy grass. The difference you may notice is that real grass starts to turn brown and limp during a dry period, and the fake version stays healthfully green, because it doesn't have the demand for water that comes with the real thing.

You may also notice that real grass grows quickly, especially when there is a lot of rain. synthetic grass stays the same height no matter what, so you do not have to look out and see a field of unruly grass that desperately needs a trim.

The real stuff demands attention and still dies out at times, but the fake stuff will always give you beauty and something soft to sink your toes into.

Time and Attention

When you have real grass and it is not properly tended to, you have to deal with the overgrown look it gives to your home or business. Either the grass will grow out of control or it will die back. There is also some time and attention required to get rid of weeds when they overtake your real grass.

You will not be required to invest nearly as much time on fake grass. Overgrowth and grass death is never a concern. You have to do very little on a daily or weekly basis to keep it healthy and beautiful. It will even look great during cold and incredibly hot seasons when the real thing dies back or turns brown.

Standing Tall

Real grass will never stand up to heavy traffic as well as the synthetic products now being sold. Foot traffic, bike traffic, and pet traffic is not nearly enough to do this tough stuff in. Real grass may make you want to put out a sign demanding no one step on your grass, but when it is not real you can let the neighborhood come over to play.

What Is Best for You?

No matter what type of grass you purchase, there will be some type of maintenance involved. As you make your decision, think about how much time you will have to spend taking care of each of these types of grass. Think about how you want your lawn to look year round, and how hard you really want to work to get the lawn of your dreams.

Green grass year round is a luxury, but you can have it if you go with a synthetic product. If you just love yard work and want to spend more time with your grass, the real thing may be just what you need.
