Located in central Turkey, it has been home to many cultures over the centuries but it was first shaped 60 million years ago by the eruption of two volcanoes, which created lots of unusual cones and valleys. You can also find more than 600 churches cut into the rock in the region, some that have frescoes on the walls to give an idea of what life used to be like.
If you go to Turkey, you can't leave without visiting Ephesus. This is an ancient city that dates back to 12BC and is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. It used to be a very important trade and religious center and is home to one of the Seven Churches of Revelation, where St Paul lived and preached. It was also once home to the Temple of Artemis, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Around 20% of the city has been excavated.
One last place to visit while you're in Turkey is Mount Nemrut, which used to be where the small but rich Commagene Kingdom was based. There are large representations of Zeus and Apollo, as well as the famous sanctuary of Antiochos I. Built by him as a funerary monument, it is more than 150 meters in diameter and more than 50 meters tall, so it's seriously big. Mt Nemrut is part of the Taurus mountain range and is definitely a beautiful sight.
