Football Lines Then And Now

By James Taylor

More and more followers of sports today watch games and events with one eye on the games and the other on prognostications. Not always was talk of point spreads, for example, such a regular part of fan activities. Football lines, and how they are seen and used today, probably best reflects this shift.

Though betting on college and NFL games has been around for years, it was not always a mainstream feature. Not long ago, betting on sports was reserved for occasional trips to cities with casinos, or through bookies, for example. The sports gambling world had somewhat of a dubious reputation.

Now, it is easy to talk about game odds with just about anyone. Almost unconsciously, fans weave betting related tidbits of information into conversations. The fact is, tons of fans often based who they think the best team are depending on the latest point spreads.

Certainly the way that the media has incorporated talk of betting spreads has evolved as well. Key segments on radio and television shows, for example, are dedicated to predicting what teams will win and by how much. And, there is no shortage of coverage, as this kind of media focus is seen throughout the course of the year.

In recent years, the focus on spreads and game odds has exploded along with the growth of the internet. Sites with expert analysis are available 24 hours a day. If one wants to subscribe to services that help predict winners, that is available as well.

The fact that fans are surrounded by football lines is largely take for granted today. It was not that long ago that the everyday sports fan was not privy to this kind of information. Now, it would be difficult to watch or read about a game without it.
