Information About Cycling In Italy

By Fabio DeMartino

Italians derive great pleasure from cycling. Cyclists from across the world throng to Italy every year in large numbers to revel in the experience. Weather is very much favourable to cycling and these cyclists revel at the sight of wonderful landscapes in Italy.

In contrast to cycling in other European countries like Spain or Switzerland, cyclists visiting Italy may find it a little more difficult to get around on public transport with their bicycle. Many trains in Italy do permit passengers to bring on board bicycles; however, there are some trains that do not accommodate cyclists.

Generally, the long distance national train services tend not to have bicycle cabins while nearly all of the regional train services do provide bicycle storage facilities on board their trains. The best thing to do if you are unconfident is to look for the bicycle logo on the side of the train which indicates that there is a bicycle carriage on board.

All trains in Italy do not permit the carrying of a bicycle in the passenger compartment. It does not cost much but only 3.50 Euros that fetches a one day pass to board a bicycle in a train. This allows you to take your bicycle for a whole day on board any number of trains. This pass serves the purpose in the case of cycling lovers who like to have short stints at cycling in different parts of Italy.

Weather in Italy is so conducive that it facilitates the cycling enthusiasts to enjoy their cycling stints throughout the year. Cycling in the northern Italian Alps during winter where snowfall is heavy is an exception. Even though the country does not receive heavy rainfall it might be enough to carry with you a water proof top while cycling.

Italy is filled with hundreds of cycling paths that are well distributed throughout the country that wherever you go you will find one. It is from the tourist enquiry office of the towns in Italy that you get valid information about panoramic cycling routes in Italy.

Tuscany is a great place for cyclists from all around the world because of the moderate weather and a breath-taking countryside which it provides. If you are on the lookout for some extra pleasure then Florence, a beautiful town is quite nearby too.

Giro d'Italia is the major cycling competition held in Italy in May every year. This competition is held for several rounds and it runs for a period of three weeks. Professional cyclists from all parts of the world take part in this competition that started in the 1930's. Every year understandably the Italian cyclists steal the show.

Just as little preference is given to health and safety measures in case of Mediterranean fashion so is in the case with cycling too in Italy. Stringent road rules are missing in Italy and it is up to the cyclist to take with him a helmet or a reflector while cycling. For safety precautions it is desirable to carry them while cycling in Italy.
