Quorn & Possible Vegetarian Fast Food

By Rob Sutter

Just from hearing "fast food" and "vegetarian" in the same sentence, you might just think that there aren't two terms that are more opposite. You wouldn't associate one with another, especially when you consider the levels of health that the two contain. Fast food is typically quite terrible for the body in large quantities while a smart vegetarian lifestyle can assist the body in the long run. Quorn products or not, it seems like these two terms are going to have more in common than we thought.

According to the Washington Post, McDonalds seems primed to put Fish McBites on the menu in order to coincide with the upcoming Lent. It will be made available through this week until March, which means that it's going to be a limited time offer. I don't think that there is a better time in the world for McDonalds to offer these options, so I think that it's clever placement on the fast food mogul's part. However, I don't think that as many people are going to take to it as the people behind this idea believe.

Maybe McDonalds is making a sound decision, appealing to a group that may not easily come into the restaurant due to the prevalence of meat products. However, I don't know how many vegans are going to settle for a fast food place when you have food authorities the likes of Quorn available. Yes, they may be less common but sometimes the meatless foods they offer satiate them better and are more satisfying as well. This is one of the reasons why I believe companies such a Yumi Media deserve more attention.

Quorn seems to know what meatless food has to have in order to be good and that's one of the reasons why I endorse it. McDonalds is a bit tougher for me to recommend, however. I understand that they want to create a menu option that will arrive during the time of Lent but is this company one that you can count on when it comes to meatless selections in the long term? There aren't many which I believe people are going to run out to get their hands on.

As far as McDonald's choices are concerned, I don't know if they are made with the long term mindset taken into account. Yes, people are going to notice the new menu option and I'm sure that people who are curious enough are going to try it for the sake of experimenting. However, to say that it's going to bring new consumers in so that they will stick around to try the other options would be untrue. Even though meatless options aren't as common as fast food places, they still exist.
