The Fundamentals About Upper Salt River Rafting

By Brittney Swanson

Upper Salt River rafting is sometimes called white water rafting. It refers to an outdoor game that employs rafts to navigate water masses such as oceans, lakes, seas, or rivers. The raft is usually inflated with atmospheric air to give it buoyancy. This sport is performed in whitewater or other ranks of raging waters to make it exciting and thrilling to raft passengers.

Rafting started becoming popular in the mid 70s and since then, it has continued to gain popularity in many regions. The dangerous nature of the game makes it to be referred to as an extreme sport. It requires great skills for passengers to go without injuries.

Current rafts are inflammable ships made of durable, multi-layered vinyl and/or rubberized fabrics. The fabrics have multiple independent air pockets and the length could be to a maximum of 6 meters while the breadth could extend to 2.5 meters. The sizes are normally standardized and are held within some range on every product. However, there are other smaller makes of rafts called the packrafts. They are small and weigh less than 2Kg. They are designed to carry one person at a time.

Rafts appear in several different aspects that differ from one location to another. Standard rafts hold from four to twelve individuals. They can be asymmetrical or symmetrical depending on the maker. Symmetrical types are normally steered by paddles at the sterns. Asymmetrical versions are rudder controlled although paddles and oars may be used on them too. The paddles or oars are usually positioned midways in the device and are driven by at least 2 people onboard.

Waters in which rafting is done can be categorized in six main categories, grade one to six. Grade one category has small rough areas that require slight maneuvers and basic skills. Grade 2 has some rough areas and maybe some rocks. It requires some maneuvering and basic paddling skills. Grade three categories have whitewaters, small waves, and maybe small drops without any considerable danger. It requires significant maneuvering with experienced paddling skills.

Grade 4 categories consist of whitewaters, considerable drops, possible rocks, and medium waves. This level needs whitewater experience and acute maneuvers. Grade 5 levels have large volume, whitewaters, probability of big boulders, large waves, hazards, and big drops. It requires superior whitewater experience and defined maneuvering. Grade 6 levels have substantial whitewaters, huge waves, substantial drops, huge rocks, and hazards. Grade 6 levels are view as suicidal and passing them is primarily attributed to extreme skills and/or luck. Severe injuries or deaths take place in these waters.

Rafts are different from kayaks and canoes in whitewaters and have specific skills of maneuvering them around obstacles. Punching is among the techniques. In this skill, the raft crew rows the device faster to give it a lot of speed to push across hydraulics without being halted. Such hydraulics are usually dodged by canoes and kayaks.

Upper Salt River rafting is a sport enjoyed by many. There are companies that produce quality products and avail them at low costs. In some places, the equipment is handmade.
