Read Reviews On Kindle Fire The 8.9" 4G Model; Should You Just Buy An iPad?

By Barry Colletti

Here is my review of Kindle Fire 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless model. I own this upgrade myself and I can tell you first hand if it is worth the buy or not.

Instead of buying an iPad 3, I wanted to save some money and go with something that does almost the same things as the iPad but with a cheaper price tag.

I really appreciate how this model was designed. When the Kindle is on landscape mode, the shortcut bar, flips to the right of the screen.

Now this eliminates the hassle to find them. I am happy that the buttons are at the bottom when you are in landscape mode since this mode takes up a lot of vertical space.

On this model, the Home button is on the right instead of the left like on the previous model. Although I find this odd, it really does not bother me as long as the landscape space is not used up.

The Kindle 4G does not weigh your arm down. It can be held more easily in one hand. The large bezel is not pleasing to the eyes but I'll deal with it.

The backing has a soft touch that feels good; and it is nice and light but it is thicker than the iPad. This model only weighs 20oz. A major improvement on this model is the volume buttons and the larger screen.

With both speakers on both sides of the display, the Kindle 4G puts out some good sound that fills an entire room.

Amazon allows you to store your favorite tunes in the Cloud but you are limited to 250 songs. That's a bummer. If you love reading extras about movies and e-books, you can do so with the X-ray software that comes installed with this model.

It also has FreeTime which is great for children. I got bored with X-ray after I used it a couple of times. Instead of reading interesting features about the movie, I just wanted to watch and enjoy it. I do enjoy the FreeTime.

While they are enjoying the Kindle, I have some piece of mind in knowing what they are doing. Free Time mode emits a vibrant bright blue color in the background on the display which lets me know my children are viewing what they are supposed to be viewing.

To be sure everyone can play his/her favorite games, I can keep a close eye on their time. The Kindle 4G has a tough exterior that will stand up to child's play.

The platform that Amazon uses for the Kindle 4G is a customized version of Android 4.0. Now, this by no means replaces the iPad. It is just used by Amazon to sell you stuff. This platform is used by Amazon to make it easier for you to buy items from Amazon via your tablet/e-reader.

The Android's home screen is customizable with live wallpapers, widgets, and weather apps but the Kindle's home screen is not.

I really like the immersive reading feature this model has. While you are reading an e-book on the screen, you can listen to it being read with the audio at the same time. So, if you should lose your place or just get tired of reading on the screen, you can listen to the audio book. Immersive reading also uses Dolby sound, which makes it sound extra good.

You'll appreciate the fact that the Silk browser runs faster and smoother than the other models. You can turn your full screen mode on; or it can be turned to "reading view" mode.

Background noise that takes up valuable space is cleared when in "reading view" mode. Uploading and downloading some MS Word documents and PDF files can be done quite easily.

Book titles and movies display the same way as they did on the original model. You still have that library look and feel. Your book titles are easily and clearly displayed. This way, you can find what you are searching for quickly at a glance.

Whisper-sync is on the Kindle 4G. Whisper-sync allows you to access your content on any Kindle device you have. So, if you purchase an e-book with a previous model Kindle, you can read it on this model.

Skype works great while using wi-fi but it is not as functional as it is on your desktop. You can check your e-mail. You have access to yahoo, aol, and gmail. Facebook is already integrated on this model.

You can surf the Net, poke a friend on Facebook, or share photos with friends and family. The Kindle 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless is an excellent cross between a tablet an an e-reader without the high cost.
