Moving & Packing Tips

By Roger Frost

One of the most important tips is numbering your boxes and creating an itemized list of the contents. Use your computer or just use a simple spiral notebook. Keep your packing list at a central location with all your labeling equipment, marking pens and box tape. When describing the box contents, be specific -- "A-D description" is better than "files", and "Mom's dishes" rather than "misc. kitchen".

Write everything down! You'll thank yourself when un-packing or simply needing one item in a hurry. Before you pack even one box, create a simple record keeping system. Create a computer-printed list of numbers with a space to write the contents. Or have a spiral-bound notebook for the job. You'll place a number on EVERY box you pack and list the contents on your list. Don't put the list down unless it's in a place you'll call Packing Central. This is where you'll find your labels, marking pens, box tape, and other supplies.

When doing your own packing, pack similar items together. For example, if you're packing up the contents of your medicine cabinet, don't add kitchen utensils to the box. That will confuse matters when you're unpacking the box. Instead, add more bathroom items to that box. And while we're talking bathroom items, washcloths and towels make excellent stuffing. They can be used to prevent items from moving around inside a box. It's best that boxes are filled to the brim to keep them from collapsing. After you've filled a box, label it with your name, what it contains and an arrow indicating which side is up. And of course, if it's fragile, write that on the box as well.

Have every family member pack some items that they will want as soon as you get to your new home. This could include a fresh set of sheets, towel, phone, night light and any item they might require. Put these items in a brightly coloured box so it can be identified easily.

Professional movers have a detailed list of items that they are not allowed to carry. Most flammable liquids, aerosol cans, chemicals and pressurized containers are just some of the items typically forbidden. Check with your mover prior to packing an obtain a complete list of banned items.

Remember to keep your important papers and insurance policies etc in a separate place and take them with you when travelling. It is a good idea to keep any financial documents, family photos, school records and any other important documents with your self during the move. This can prevent loss or damage to items which may be difficult to replace at your new destination.
