Traveling With Children - A Parent's Guide

By Kay Dalton

The first, and best thing you can do when traveling with children is to prepare to avoid the potential of stress and consternation. Most children, though, happen to be well behaved, but what if you are the parent of a hyperactive child who throws a tantrum a minute? As a parent, it is your responsibility to make sure your child, or children remain in their seats and behave themselves.

In order to get the best deals possible on a flight, it is always best to book them a few months in advance. Aside from this, it allows you to book accordingly so that you and your children are seated next to each other. Many airlines allow you to choose your seats when booking in advance, so choose seats that are next to each other so you can monitor your children. A baby would need sit on a special child seat, so request accordingly. Think of it as an airplane's version of the car seats you may be more familiar with.

Explaining to children in advance of the rules when flying will help reduce issues once you are aboard. If possible, choose an airline that serves child portions and meals that are appropriate. Bring snacks for the entire flight if your child is a picky eater, and save the heavier meals for when your flight has landed. This is recommended on international flights as the food served may not be for children. You can get your kids to eat more by ordering one large meal for sharing.

Keeping your children amused on a long flight is often the largest obstacle a parent has to hurdle. But this can be quite easy if you bring your child's favorite toys, stuffed animals and favorite children's books. Because they may get bored quickly, have a few extra toys packed. If your children have something to do for the five to six hours flights usually like, they will generally behave themselves.

Saving time at the airport by printing off boarding passes and other documents before your flight will be easier than standing in line with your children. The self-service kiosks at the airport would allow you to print them off if you don't have the means to do so at home. During the long wait, do not let your children run off unsupervised. This will only encourage them to do the same on the plane. Children are such bouncing balls of energy, and you have to ensure that they control that energy to the extent that they remain excited and have fun while on their trip, but control that excitement and not yell or run around causing trouble.

It is always best to teach your children the right way - have them observe good manners at all times and listen to what their elders say - in order for you as a parent to make traveling with children worry-free.
