Hints and Tips For Learning French

By Jane Sedgewick

Learning French is a noble goal, but if you are not a skilled linguist, figuring out the best way to learn the language can be a bit of a challenge. It's common knowledge to find people who are more comfortable learning by their own effort. Of course, you'll find those who like being in a classroom atmosphere where there's more immersion and lots of repetition. You can find many different methods to learn a language. Deciding on the best approach for you may involve some testing, trial, and error. Next we'll discuss some tips and hints to get you started.

There are more than a few ways for you to learn a language. No one style is going to be any better than another. You need to approach the learning experience with an open mind and access your learning strengths and weaknesses. Listening to the language may be best. Others are visual learners. You may be one of the people that enjoys group learning in the classroom as opposed to tapes and books. Identifying your learning style and then using that knowledge to approach your language study is the fastest and easiest way to learn a new language. Here are some hints to help you if you aren't sure where to start your language learning process.

Flashcards are extremely effective. New language learners brush off flashcard because they are looked upon as being old-fashioned and unsophisticated. After all, why use flash cards with all of the super advanced technology that is available? Because they will have you outperforming anyone who relies solely on technology to learn. Nothing else beats flashcard when it comes to reenforcing common words into your memory. They are easy to take with you. Flash cards can also allow you to work with a friend, even if that friend has no experience with French. When it is all said and done, flashcards have passed the test time and again as one of the best tools available for a new language learner. Another thing you might do is hire a tutor.

A tutor can help you in ways that you will not be able to help yourself. The advantage of a tutor is that you can get the kind of instruction you would in a class, but you don't have to go to a school. This can be a great compromise for someone who is afraid of learning in a classroom setting but who is also having a hard time learning through methods like audio courses and books. With a tutor you can gain the kind of conversational skills as well as familiarity with the formal rules of grammar; if you plan to visit a French speaking country, this can be very helpful!

There really are a number of different approaches to learning French, or any language. Just refuse to be discouraged. Learning any second language is tough for most if not all people. So try to be patient and work at it, and it won't take much time before you're a fluent speaker of French.
