All About Memory Cards For Cameras: Benefits And Advantages

By Rick Newman

The memory cards for cameras come in different sizes and shapes like the other things in the world. The prime function of these cards is to store images. These chips are very small and efficient. There is a variety of chips supported by a common camera. It can be through different slots or by varying a common format.

These chips are based on flash memory, a non-volatile form of memory that stores data without the aid of power. They have a large capacity of recording print-quality high resolution images. The card design and the capacities depend largely on the camera being used.

The most controversial factor while selecting memory cards for cameras is the speed of data transfer. Most of the manufacturers specify the speed in MBPS where as it is seen that many use the suffix 'x'. It is known that 1x equals 150kbps. Another criteria used is the card system in the SD card formats.

Standard Digital (SD) is one of the main kinds of memory chips. In one or the other ways most of the cameras use one or more forms of SD memory chips. These cards shape like small postage stamps and are commercially available.

Now days the SD chips are being replaced by the SDHC format (HC means 'high capacity'). These have a large range of memory from 4GB to 32GB and have better speed and performance. Amazingly they have the same old dimensions. SDXC cards though not too common types have also emerged. They offer capacities from 32GB to 64GB and might be raised to 2TB in the upcoming years. The usage is in DSLRs and other high definition (HD) cameras.

Although many DSLR cameras have adopted the SD formats but the professional DLSRs maintain support for the Compact Flash media cards for cameras. They are larger, stronger than SD chips and more suitable to use in adverse conditions.
