Colosseum In Rome:Visit the Monumental Colosseum While Staying in a Rome Hotel

By John Roney

The Colosseum is one of the world's greatest mysteries? How come people of long ago can get so intelligent and intuitive in their design skills that they can build one massive structure? It can even contain as much as 60,000 people who could enter into the venue through 80 arches. However, the Colosseum is more than just an amphitheater. It also speaks about the culture of the ancient Romans, who were fond of battles, victory, losses, and liberation. The Colosseum, which could have been named after the statue of Colossus situated near it and for its gigantic size, was built during the Flavian dynasty. Gladiator games and circuses were two of the best forms of entertainment organized by the heads of state, so they can gain favor from the crowd.

Another place that must be visited, purely for the wow-factor, is the Colosseum; you and your loved ones will be extremely in awe when you look at its marvellous construction. History tells us that, to please and entertain the public, ancient Emperors would hold a variety of games within the Colosseum. More famously, it was used to hold outrageously ferocious fights to the death between gladiators and sometimes between gladiators and wild exotic animals. The magnificence of the Colosseum means that it must be visited during any trips to Rome.

The Colosseum was built by emperors from the Flavian dynasty, which ruled between 69 AD and 96 AD and is characterised by its tiers of arches. But the structure is not the only awe-inspiring building in the capital. The Pantheon is another renowned monument, made from thick brick walls and marble columns, with a vast dome in its centre. The Pantheon is thought to have been rebuilt by Hadrian between 119 AD and 128 AD and was formerly a Roman temple before being converted into a Christian church. It houses the tombs of Kings Vittorio Emmanuele II and Umberto I, as well as the artist Raphael.

While staying in hotel accommodation in Rome, you won't want to miss a visit to the Sistine Chapel, which forms part of the Pope's official residence. Famous the world over for its ceiling frescoes painted by Michelangelo, the building also features walls lined with paintings by masters including Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. And not too far away is St Peter's Basilica, another impressive architectural example finished in 1626 and designed in part by Michelangelo. The late Renaissance church has a dome designed by the painter.

If you settle for a private tour guide, then you have to make advanced reservation. Prices vary, depending on how many people are participating the private tour. Usually, however, they don't include the transportation from your hotel to the venue, as well as entrance fee. They will only cover the fee for the tour guide. Oftentimes, too, you will get to meet "free" tour guides. Stay away from them since they are not legal! They are not Official Guides, they just work for independent travel tours.
