TopicsTaught In Web Design Courses

While getting a certificate in web design, you'll have to take several web design courses in different subjects. Through these courses you will learn how to create useful, and attractive websites, develop online art, and work with the most current Internet software and technology. When signing up for classes at a local college or online website, take some time to learn about the different scripts and design software you'll need to learn to be web designer.

The first and most obvious script you'll be learning is HTML, it is short for "hypertext markup language". This code is what tells the web browser where to put particular elements on a web page and, in general, how to display that page. Designers also work in CSS, which is an acronym for "cascading style sheets". Web designers use CSS to specify where to put content on the page, how to display that content using different fonts, background colors and foreground colors, and how to incorporate other elements into a website.

JavaScript is another language you'll need to learn while taking web design courses, this programming script is used in processing functions on a website. As a server-side script, this browser based language tells the computer how to make several elements on a website more interactive, such as using forms, drop-down menus, and even simple games. Other programming languages used by designers include AJAX and PHP which allow websites to add a database of information so that users can quickly search for important data such as class times, popular music of the 1980's, or just a favorite recipe.

You also learn how to create different kinds of multimedia in your web design courses, including audio, video, and graphic files. Many different kinds of multimedia are incorporated into modern websites to make them more user friendly and interesting. In fact, an interest in art and design is necessary for a web designer to make it in his chosen career. Students will want to use their time in college to develop their own portfolio of work to show potential clients. Creating low-cost or free websites for clients with a small budget will still in school is a good way to develop that portfolio and gain experience. It may be a good idea to take a couple of two-dimensional design and color concept classes in addition to the multimedia classes.

School requirements for web design courses include these basic suggestions as well as many other subjects. Professional designers and developers must know other programming languages beyond JavaScript, Ajax, and PHP. They might also make use of Flash, or Game Maker to create small games for websites. The portfolios of professional designers will also be filled with samples of multimedia and screen images of websites that they've developed over the years.
