Namibia: Southern Africa's Jewel

Outside of SA, Namibia is maybe the simplest country in Southern Africa to go and visit and explore on a self-drive vacation. It's easy to see why Namibia is such a sought-after destination to which visitors return frequently : it offers sunshine, a big spread of animal life, various breathtaking beauty and a rich choice of geological attractions. On top of this, the friendliness of its people and the well-developed structure make it a pleasure to visit.

Namibia has a changeless appeal for each one of those that live there, engendering an enthusiasm beyond logical reasoning, and a craving to share this overwhelming land with others. Time and time again, the country and its folks grows on visitors - even explorers found themselves drawn to return despite all they had suffered.

Namibia tours cast a spell that holds the traveller, and you will always remember what you have experienced and seen. With nostalgia you'll always recall the overwhelming, haunting, soulfulness of the desert, the vast expanses of the south and the red dune belts of the Kalahari Desert. The rolling savannah of the central plateau and the wild bush country that stretches north toward the Capri Strip, where the country mystically unravels into lush rainforest enhancing the banks of raging brooks.

Northern Namibia is a big wilderness with awesome views, abounding game and colourful characters. Regions include Kaokoland, recognized as one of the craziest areas of Africa and the only desert area in the world where elephants, black rhino, lions and giraffes live , Etosha, considered one of the greatest wildlife viewing locales of the world as most of Africa's gigantic game species is located here in large numbers , and the Caprivi, a 400km piece of land stretching out like a finger along the great Zambezi to the border junction of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The central region of Namibia incorporates the capital Windhoek, the Namib-Naukluft National Park, covering about fifty thousand square km, and includes Sossusvlei and Sessriem, Naukluft, Namib section and Sandwich Harbour. The area of Sossusvlei is not only marked by some of the highest sand dunes on the planet, it's also the ideal place for all of those who have already 'been there and done that', Swakopmund, a well-liked holiday location with an interesting mix of Bohemian and German influences and exudes an atmosphere of history and adventure, Walvis Bay, and the close by Sandwich Harbor are known for their flocks of flamingos, Cape pelicans, and thousands of migrant water birds, Damaraland this lovely and desolate area has 3 unique features, some of the most diverse geological phenomena on the continent, the richest rock art sites on earth and a number of systematic, highly evolved animal life such as the elusive desert elephant and the rare and endangered black rhino. The Desert Black Rhino thrives in Damaraland.

The southern area of Namibia contains the Fish River Canyon, the world's 2nd largest canyon, Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Luderitz, an almost surreal place and just outside the city lies the eerie spook city of Kolmanskop, where the desert is gradually enveloping it. The haunting view of houses stuffed with sand, is a sight that is not easily forgotten, the Quiver Tree Forest was determined to be a nationwide monument in 1995. Some of the trees are between two hundred and 300 years in age. It's a photographers dream.

Namibia experiences 2 main seasons : summer from October to April and winter from May to Sep. The summer period is characterised by huge rainfall between Jan and April, less so from October to Nov. Therefore the days are hot and sweltering with temperatures up to 40degrees C. The climate is more moderate along the coast and in the mountains. The winters are dry and daytime temperatures vary around 23 degrees C. Without regard for the season, the nights are chilly and the thermometer can fall to 0.

Namibia is liberating in its harsh beauty, which should induce your senses and captivate your soul. Like a rough diamond waiting to be discovered in its ethereal magnificence, Namibia waits for its visitors and explorers to uncover its haunting beauty.
