Does Google's New Privacy Policy Make Search More Personal?

By Anne Fox

Months ago, Google faced criticisms about invading the privacy of its end users when it admitted that it collects information and maintains a record of its users search behaviour. Google said they do this not to use information against the person or to invade privacy, but as a method to know what search results to provide its users.

To demonstrate the use of data collection, when utilising Gmail, you'll notice that if recently you've sent several emails to lawyers, then the sponsored links showing on the right hand side of the Gmail will display law-related services or links.

How Does The Privacy Policy Influence SEO?

The quick answer to this question is, none. If anything, the privacy policy reaffirms Google as a search engine, even though lately it has released its own edition of a social network, Google Search Plus Your World by Google+. Google will always focus on search, also it uses information which web users give it or which it gets from web users in order to improve search.

How the privacy policy was spotlighted in view of SEO could be because Google will offer its users a different search result experience based on what Google has tracked as the user search behaviour. Also Google has presented correlation of its products. For example, if you're signed in to Google Docs and you would like to share the file via email, Google will foretell from its Gmail contact list the email addresses of people whom Google believes would be the recipient of such document.

Do Google Searchers Have A Say On The Privacy Access?

Certainly you've a voice before Google. You can simply opt to switch off the search history and this may forbid Google to trace your search behavior. However you should understand that this will also limit Google's capability to return the best relevant search result for you. You do have the freedom to decide on what's going to best work for you.

Search Plus Your World, for example, offers you private search results rather than the public results. But you need to sign up to your Google+ account first before you can access personal search. If you wish to know the searches in general, then don't sign on to Google+. If you are looking to know what your friends think about a particular search query which you've put into Google, then register to your Google+ account to obtain this information.

However Google innovates, it's going to remain as a search engine. And for this reason, SEO will have lasting relationship with the biggest search engine in the world.
