Latin America Travel Highlights: Costa Rica And Peru For The Sporty And The Cultured

By Darcy Gautreau

Costa Rica is a fashionable place to live in and visit. Many artists from all over the globe have settled in the area, but it also offers some unique adventures. Machu Picchu and Peru travel are alternatives that offer a historical perspective unlike any other, with ruins of the Inca tribe.

Adventurous sports people will enjoy the opportunities in Costa Rica. It has flat, winding back roads perfect to mountain bike on. Take a cultured trip of the local art scene and see the cattle paths.

Those who always wished they could be Tarzan for a moment have the opportunity with treetop swinging. People from all over the globe gather for this rare adventure. One is harnessed after climbing a tree and then swings between tree tops from cables.

The Reventazon River is a class V rafting adventure. The waters are only for the experienced. Beginners should start the sport in alternative waters.

Water sports are abundant in the area. Witch's rock is a famed surfing spot. Hire a four by four and drive between beaches. Kite and wind surfers will have a wonderful time at Lake Arenal, which is subject to gale force winds at some times of the year.

Canyoning is an adventurous hike through canyon rivers and creeks. Puerta Jimenez is excellent for the sport. Those inclined more towards the sea can dive at Isla del Coco. It's often rated as one of the top diving regions globally and one can take an overnight excursion by boat. There are many hammerheads, manta rays and whale sharks.

Hikers may enjoy Mount Chirripo on the Pacific coastline. From the top one can view both the Pacific and Caribbean seas. The hike takes visitors through cloud forests and pastures. However, those in the area might prefer to hike the Inca trail in Peru.

The Inca trail is the most famous hike in South America and can be done in luxury style or, for those taking it on as a spiritual quest, with ruck sack and tent. The most exciting for many is the site of Machu Picchu, one of the world's wonders. It's an entire village made of stone and interconnected by roads and stairs.

There are many ways to walk the Inca trail ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. The hardest option often takes seven days to complete but its rewards are a multitude of ruins and a final day at Machu Picchu. Tourists need to plan their Inca Trail experiences long in advance as permits are necessary and it's often booked.

Machu Picchu is a fascinating study of the masonry skills of the Inca tribe. It's high in the Andes and is surrounded by diverse flora as it's in the middle of a forest. When viewed at its high level, it's an extraordinary vision that is, it's said, best viewed in solitude.

There are weasels, ocelots, bears and pampas cats around the site. When in Peru, tourists should also spend time viewing the ruins close to Cuzco. Machu Picchu and Peru travel are incomplete until some interaction has taken place with the locals, as they live similarly to the Incas in many ways.
