Conservation Depends On Waterfowl Hunting For Funding

By Agnes Franco

It is not often realized, but hunters are frequently amongst the biggest contributors to conservation. This is due to them being willing to pay to ensure the future availability of their sport. It is for this reason that Missouri waterfowl hunting is still excellent.

Hunters are not usually thought of as keen conservationists. With a few exceptions, most hunt because they enjoy the whole outdoors experience. They are therefore prepared to back authorities responsible for ensuring the continued availability of that experience. In fact, early conservationists were often hunters, as well.

The relevant authorities in Missouri recognize this and have adopted a pragmatic approach. The result is that hunting has been integrated with conservation and provides a lot of the funding. Without this money and the tourist income from providing excellent facilities for hunters, conservation efforts might not be as successful as they obviously are. Suitable habitat are being preserved in a natural state as a direct consequence.

Apart from this, there is a strict and well-considered management policy. Waterfowl numbers are monitored and bag limits as well as numbers of hunters strictly controlled, while open seasons are also limited. The result is that the best sport is in the conservation areas

It soon becomes obvious that both hunters and conservationist wish to preserve wildlife and love outdoor living. It's just that some believe that cropping of excess numbers is sustainable and even necessary, considering the reduction in the numbers predators. With urbanization being a fact of life, management of this important resource is the only way to ensure survival. This has so far proved successful.

A debt is owed to the many proactive and clear-thinking conservation authorities who do their best to ensure the survival of the various species. Without their efforts, habitats might have been destroyed and the world would be the poorer for the loss of diversity. Those responsible for missouri waterfowl hunting are doing an excellent job and their efforts deserve further support.
