Seaweed-A Miracle for Skincare

By Sarah Crandall

No, I'm not talking about sushi; it's Dr. Max Huber's discovery 40 years ago of the healing effects of sea kelp on his very own chemically burned skin. Huber developed a strategy to process the kelp into a useable form. This discovery became the Miracle Broth that's the main ingredient in Creme de La Mer. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, lecithin, Vitamins C, E, and B12, oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower are other ingredients in the creme.

I've used the creme for a few years and there's a particular technique to apply this glorious product , which has a particularly thick consistency in the jar. Place a touch (roughly 1/2 small spoon) in the middle of your hand and rub your hands together till the creme liquefies and turns clear. Then you apply this clear emulsion to your skin, focussing on the driest areas. You will immediately feel it absorbing into your skin, which takes a few minutes. Your skin will feel dewy and will actually glow! My skin is naturally oily and this is the sole creme that does not exacerbate my oiliness.

Does La Mer actually benefit mature skin? Kelp and specific other ingredients are anti oxidants, but the true secret to healthy skin is in maintaining a disciplined skin regimen on a regular basis. Using Creme de la Mer will penetrate the outer layer of your skin, "puffing" it up; thus reducing fine surface imperfections. The most significant difference between young skin and mature skin is the pesence of "puffiness" or collagen, and La Mer can help to regenerate collagen.

Besides the Creme de la Mer, the key product of the line, I like the Regenerating Serum, with a creamy texture just out of the bottle. There is a tiny spoon connected to the lid that you use to place a spoonful in your hand to apply to your skin. When in a rush in the morning, I use this instead of the creme because it soaks into the skin quicker.

After being a shameless sun-worshipper in my teens and twenties, the area around my eyes is particularly damaged. I can't apply eye makeup till I've used the La Mer Eye Concentrate, which is a more concentrated version of the Regenerating Serum. I've have noticed a serious difference in the lines under my eyes, due to the concentrate's capability to regenerate collagen and elastin.

Small wonder celebrities are rumoured to stockpile huge quantities of La Mer!
