Plant Pruning Procedure

By Bill Duggen

What is tree pruning? For increasing the growth and maintaining the desired shape of tree, sometime extra or unwanted plant parts are discarded. This procedure is known as pruning. It is the easiest process to maintain the shape and dimension of a tree.

When tree should be pruned. It is pruning and training which is habitually practiced in the initial life stage of trees. With the aid of pruning the resistance capacity of trees will increase against any severe damages before maturity. We should avoid older, trees during pruning as it is both risky & costly to do. It is wise to exercise pruning on adult trees when they stay in dormancy. As soon as any injuries appear on fresh trees, pruning is experienced.

Pruning tree at early age It is nothing but pruning which is initiated on new trees first year after transplanting Through pruning we can recognize and right glitches with the main framework of the tree within the first few years after planting. During pruning the lower branches should not be pruned as they produce food for the tree and provide shadow to subsidiary bark.

It is recommended to keep the scaffold branches at 45 degree angle with the central leader as they make the framework of the tree. Closely spaced scaffolds lateral create less lateral branches whether widely spaced branches produce large numbers of lateral branches.

Pruning the tree when it is large The people of the state think that during storm large tree can hamper their property. So, they are willing to train their trees from top areas. Topping trees operation should be avoided. The central leader and the main branch of the tree is removed through this practice. So the tree is affected badly.

Thinning of tree Thinning is an operation through which a plant can absorb more sunlight as the canopy area gets a chance to open up and permits more sunlight to penetrate. Getting the miniature tree is not its purpose It is nothing but thinning through which the conflict to wind and pressure for the period of deficiencies can be reduced.

It is thinning which is used to separate departed, cracked, feeble or ailing branches from trees. At that time, the canopy which is going out of a size or rising densely is discarded.

Stop the spreading of tree The main objective of heading back is to decrease the complete volume of a tree. For good lateral branches heading back should accomplish by removing the foliage portion of those branches. If you want to work with a cross lateral branch, you should take a branch that will form a slope of 45 degrees with the branch which is going to be detached.

At the time of working with an upward directed limb it is convenient to accomplish slanting cut so that water cant mount up on the cutting place. If we cut large branches flush with the trunk, it can do any harm of trees. So, we must cut them from the exterior part of the collar.

Treatment for pruning cuts From the research it is proved that treated wood remains much longer than the untreated wound. The microbes that inhibit the wood grows well in a sealed wound condition. Wound dressing may cause the death of cambial cell and as a result the wound may open for long time.
