Learn Something About Stainless Steel Casters

By Grace Rivas

Stainless steel casters are certain undriven, double, compound, or single wheels meant for mounting at the base of bigger objects also called vehicles. Their primary function is to make the motion of the vehicles they are mounted onto easier. They may be made from other materials like nylon, rubber, aluminium, and plastic apart from stainless steel. Some latest models combine various materials.

These commodities have a variety of applications in different environments. Some the places where they are used include office chairs, shopping carts, theater and health equipment, and material handling equipment among several others. High capacity, heavy duty versions are utilized in industrial applications for many uses such as platform trucks, tow lines in firms, and assemblies. It is general understanding that they work best on smooth and even surfaces.

Stainless steel casters come in a variety of models including rigid, braking and locking and swivel caster wheels. A caster can be installed in a way as to roll following a straight course. In such a situation, they are fixed on a stationary point that does not change direction. Some models are installed on a pivot so that they automatically change direction to align themselves with the direction of motion.

Rigid models comprise of wheels that are mounted onto a motionless fork. The orientation of the fork is determined at the time the caster is being fixed on the vehicle. Normally the orientation of the fork is relative to the object it is fixed on. This product tends to limit vehicle travel so that it only moves on a straight path. The wheels normally resist any change in direction of movement and may need some force to do so.

A swivel caster is similar to a rigid caster in all ways with a simple modification added to the joint over the fork. The additional swivel joint allows the fork to revolve freely through 360 degrees. This allows the wheel to roll in all directions hence making it easier to move the body in all for directions without altering its orientation.

Some casters include a braking mechanism to prevent vehicles from moving or turning. The braking mechanism is attained by use of a lever which presses against a brake cam. The brake cam in turn presses against the wheel stopping it from turning. Modern models have a braking mechanism that prevent all wheels from turning at once unlike old ones where someone had to move around locking each one of them individually.

Flutter is a key drawback on any caster. Flutter is the rapid side to side swinging movement of a single wheel during motion. This condition happens at certain speeds relying on the amount of mass the wheels are supporting and the length from the steering axes to the wheel axles.

The distance between steering wheels and wheel axles is known as trailing speed and raising it may remove the flutter at moderate velocities. Stainless steel casters may be purchased from any shop around the world. Bad wheels can be repaired or can be substituted with new ones.
