What To Include In A 72 Hour Emergency Kit

By Helene Norris

Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other such disasters can happen at any time. Because these can occur so suddenly and so powerfully, the damage can be considerable. It is not only properties that are in danger, lives can also be lost. Roads can become impassable, utility systems are disrupted and so on. A 72 hour emergency kit will be a lot of help.

This is basically just about gathering things that you will need when such an event happens. You will have to include basic necessities since your access to these things may be cut off. This has to be done in advance since you will probably have to go to the store to get these things. Here are some of the items you can include.

One item that should never be forgotten is food. You will definitely be feeling the bite of hunger every few hours. The items that you choose should be those that can be stored for a long time. This way, you will not have to keep buying new supplies. Just in case you will not be able to cook, choose things that are ready to eat.

Water just like food is a basic need. Floods, earthquakes, and other such events can cut you off from a safe supply. It would be dangerous to just drink any water you can find. To be safe, make sure that everyone in the household has enough supply to last for days.

Injuries are usually common in these events. You may not be able to go to a clinic or hospital immediately since roads may be impassable and phone lines may not be working. First aid supplies will be able to treat minor issues until you can get a doctor. Medication for people with conditions should be included too.

You will need a way to contact the authorities and other family members. Unfortunately, this can be pretty difficult if you will only be relying on your mobile. You should list down the numbers of family, friends you can contact, and the emergency services in your area. Cash and copies of important documents should also be kept.

When disasters strike, you may have no electricity or you could be stuck somewhere out in the open. You will need protection from the elements. A sleeping bag can be a source of warmth. A small collection of warm clothes will also be helpful.

There are other useful items that can be brought along. A flashlight complete with an extra set of batteries will be useful. A whistle can be included so you can have something to signal with. A pocket knife can also come in handy in various situations. You can also include a radio so you can keep track of news and updates.

All of these things will have to be placed in a container. Choose something that will be easy to carry so you can move from place to place without any difficulty. Your 72 hour emergency kit should be placed where you can easily get to it. Check it every year or so as some of the items may expire and may need replacing.
