How To Make Relocating Or Moving Easier

By Joyce McIntosh

Even if you are moving into a fantastic new home or heading to a new life in a completely new state or city, chances are the whole process of moving is causing you some extra stress. While this is normal, there are definitely ways to make the entire process much easier.

It is wise to start off by making a list of all the tasks that you will need to accomplish prior to and on your actual moving date. Separate tasks into categories to make this easier. For example, you will need to inform utility companies that you no longer need service at the old address, and you will need to arrange service at the new address. This could be under the utilities section. It is important to take care of this task quickly as any delay could mean you won't have water or electricity for a few days after you move into your new place.

Other sections include a list of whom will need your change of address information. This includes credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, schools, doctor's offices, veterinarian's offices and much more. If you are moving far away, consider listing medical-related tasks such as transferring prescriptions or having copies of medical records created.

Packing is always one of the most overwhelming tasks in the moving process, and you can make it much easier if you get started as quickly as you can. Start out by packing items that you don't actually use often, such as books, memorabilia, holiday decorations and other types of decorative items, such as framed photos. Packing materials can be quite pricey, but you can cut costs by checking out websites such as Freecycle or Craigslist for people giving away moving boxes at no cost. Old newspapers are great for packing, so ask friends to save their old ones for your packing.

It often occurs that your moving out date does not coincide with your move-in date, and if it is just a day or two, you might find that the new owners or landlords are agreeable to allowing you to stay an extra couple of days. If the discrepancy will consist of several weeks or months, you will need to find an East Lansing or Bath self-storage company where you can place the majority of your furnishings and other items. Be sure to find a company that allows you to rent the unit by the month and doesn't require a multi-month or yearly contract. Some companies also allow weekly leasing, which can be a great option.

Be sure to select a storage facility that doesn't require a security deposit and also a mini storage company that allows 24/7 access in case you need to get something out of storage. The facility should be fully lit and fenced with security monitoring, as well. Some companies even offer discounts if you are a senior citizen, military personnel or a student, so be sure to take advantage of these cost-cutting extras.
