The Best In L.A.: A One-Day Excursion

By Marquerite Velasquez

Los Angeles and its surrounding environs are a vast and colorful landscape filled with a myriad of attractions. If you are in town, but just for a single day, you certainly can't expect to see all that the area has to offer. However, you can plan out a day of adventure. Here are some suggestions for those who can spend just one day in Los Angeles.

The county of Los Angeles offers hundreds of amazing places to visits, but with more than 9 million residents and 4,000 square miles, seeing it all in one day is impossible. So instead of worrying about what you will miss, take advantage of some of the cool things that you can see, such as a trip to Southern California's famous coastline.

So, with that in mind, start off your day with a breakfast by the sea. Santa Monica, a place where you can enjoy the beach, is Southern California's most iconic pier with plenty of quirky shops and people watching. There are plenty of cafes, bakeries and coffeehouses where you can grab a quick breakfast and then walk over to the pier and ride the carousel, Ferris wheel and roller coaster in Pacific Park.

When you think of history, Los Angeles doesn't immediately spring to mind. However, there are many historic sites in the area and some are older than the United States. In the 18th Century, Spaniards sent Franciscan priests to California to establish a series of missions from San Diego up to Northern California. Two of these missions are located in Los Angeles County and both offer tours. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is the older of the two, built in 1771. Mission San Fernando Rey is the other option, and this mission dates back to 1797.

Griffith Park is another great spot for visitors to Los Angeles and is certainly akin to other famous city parks such as Central Park in New York City and London's Hyde Park. This 4,300-acre park includes the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium, the Los Angeles Zoo and the Travel Town Museum, which includes historic locomotives, trolley cars, passenger cars and other train-related displays. In addition, there are miles of hiking trails, playgrounds and an abundance of great scenery.

After enjoying some time at the park or visiting a mission, drive on over to Culver City and enjoy a culinary confection like no other at YoKuMon. This eatery offers a wide assortment of treats, but the most popular offering is the gourmet ice cream sandwich, which is just $2 and is created by placing a substantial scoop of homemade ice cream in between two large cookies. The cookies are baked freshly throughout the day on site. You can mix and match flavors of cookies and ice cream any way you want. They also offer ice cream or cookies by themselves as well as several flavors of shaved ice.

If possible, the perfect way to end the evening is a trip to the Hollywood Bowl. Not only can you enjoy a great concert at the Hollywood Bowl, the scenery is totally L.A. The Hollywood Hills, complete with the "Hollywood" sign, serve as the backdrop at this hillside amphitheatre. The Los Angeles Philharmonic holds many events throughout the years, as well as popular artists. The Beatles and The Doors both played at the Hollywood Bowl, and few modern artists that have recently held concerts at the bowl include Pearl Jam, Jason Mraz and Barbra Streisand.
