Circumnavigating Paris:Paris, France - Place Des Abbesses

By John Roney

Paris is not only the capital, but also it is the largest city of France. It is located on the Seine River, in the northern part of France. The city of Paris has an estimated population around 2,200,000 (as of January 2007), but the metropolitan area in Paris has a population of 11,836,970 (also as of 2007) and is one of Europe's most populated metropolitan areas. In 2009 and 2010, Paris has been ranked among the 3 most influential and important cities in the world, among the first 3 "European cities of the future" (published by Financial Times), and among the top ten cities in the world "places to live in" (British review Monocle June 2010).

An important place for more than two millenniums, Paris today, is one of the world's leading cultural and business centers, and its influences in education, science, fashion, media, entertainment, politics, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities, Paris is also among the first 10 wealthiest cities in 2020 and 2025 along with New York City, Sao Paulo, London, Tokyo, and Shanghai.

The Eglise St-Jean-de-Montmartre, which dates from 1904, is named after the abbey that once stood on the site. The decorative windows, which significantly brighten up its otherwise austere facade, date from the same period.

This is where caricaturists, portrait and landscape artists congregate each day to paint local scenes and willing passers-by. Visitors throng these "street studios" so that they can can take home a drawing or painting of themselves. The place du Tertre is a fascinating, though touristy, reminder of a time when Picasso or Renoir may have sat in this very square and painted.

The French like to stroll along the streets. Circumnavigating Paris is simply destined for it! Where else can one order the latest fashion clothes? Men in elegant black costumes? Thin women in tight-fitting dresses and tiny handbags? Speaking about sights I can say that I liked almost all of them. But I was a little bit irritated by the necessity to take a look at the watches, to dash towards the bus and - most of all-by the holdups. But it was compensated by the lovely excursions. I particularly liked Versailles and the Montparnasse. I liked Paris. It's absolutely unique! And I wish it managed to preserve its charm and uniqueness in our era of globalization!
