4 Reasons Why There Will not Be An Apple High Definition TV, or iTV

By Fausto Mendez

Across the end of last year and through this year, news outlets and blogs reported several rumours and information leaks that suggest Apple will release an HDTV with a built in Apple TV UI, and this legendary device is known as the Apple iTV. Others call it the new Apple TV or the Apple HDTV, but it is always described the same. Some reliable sources even described a prototype that exists in Apple's labs. Although it could be correct that the company is testing a prototype, we've come up with 4 imperative reasons explaining why Apple won't release an HDTV any time soon.

1. Firstly, most test devices never become retail products, so you should not presume that the existence of a prototype implies Apple will release a retail product. Like any good artist or any inventive company, Apple ditches away more concepts than it uses.

2. HDTVs feature low-profit margins, and users rarely upgrade their sets. Apple would be smart if it allowed other companies to carry that burden, allowing Apple to benefit from cheap media sales while its competitors struggle to maintain the HDTV market. The company started this profit model with the iPod. It is a profit model few firms have emulated successfully, but it is what every other company wants to do.

3. Set-top boxes like the Apple TV are an ideal, inexpensive, and one-size-fits-all solution for any display type, setting and user. Similarly, it'd be a nightmare for Apple retail staff to stock the numerous display sizes in enough quantity to satisfy most users, and that would doubtless require a physical expansion of all Apple retail stores. Because Apple wouldn't expand its retail stores to sell an item with a low-profit margin, the company would be forced to carry just a few popuar display sizes, and any HDTV set ignores the projector afficionado.

4. If you want an Apple HDTV, buy an iMac. A good, top-shelf HDTV would cost at least $1000, which is enough for an Apple desktop. You can also buy an Apple display and hook up the Apple TV to it, but the beauty of the set-top box is that your can use any display size and type that you like.

As you may be able to see, the future of an Apple HDTV set seems dismal, but you never know what can happen these days since Apple's top visionary is no longer with the company.
