How to Use the Twitter DM Autoresponder the Right Way

By Enrique Ditommaso

Using Twitter to build relationships, gather leads and grow your reach is all about understanding how to use the social platform the right way. One powerful feature that comes with Twitter is the ability to send out a direct message to your followers, which can be further made more usable by simply using an autoresponder to send out a message to your new followers. The message you send out is just the beginning, and a nice greeting and 'thanks for the follow' will make a positive impression on people.

People are tired of being spammed these days, especially with fake offers that are out to scam them off their hard earned money. Of course you may not be in the make money niche at all, but still you must not make people suspicious of about your offers when you send out direct messages. No promotions that are just over the top in any way, and simply be real with people. You want your followers to trust you for who you are, and not un-follow you as soon as they get your message. We have seen autoresponder messages that were a quick 'hello' followed by a marketing message - we un-followed them.

In addition, you have to wonder if people may not think you are being professional by circumventing Twitter guidelines. Always focus on being as direct and professional when dealing with your automatic direct messages on Twitter because you've got only one shot to make a strong impression on your new follower, and you don't want to lose that.

It is interesting about the short word allowance with Twitter direct messages because they really have to count. You need to make a good impression with the message that you send out so that your follower actually understands that your intent is not be commercial in an way, but rather build a relationship. When someone starts following you, send the greeting message and put something in it that breaks the ice. It's a different thing when you're saying thanks in public, where you can send out a batch of tweets conveying your message. Remember that the stronger and more positive your direct message, the more likely that person will definitely remember you.

Anytime you include a link in your promotional direct messages, and you should do that, then never send them to a link inside of Twitter.

The Twitter autoresponder was created for a very good reason, and do not make the mistake of overlooking it or ignoring it.
