Baseball Bat Buying Tips

By Cal Davis

Sporty parents nowadays know that participating in sports is very expensive. Having a baseball player in the house can be one of the costliest of the sports. The bat alone can set you back up to $400! That is why it's important for you to know what to look for in a bat. In this article, I'll help you understand some of the main items to look for.

The grip might be one of the most key features of a bat. Obviously, there needs to be an actual comfort level with the way the bat feels in your hand. You don't want a grip that is too stiff or too soft. Too much softness can lead to a tightening of the hands, which can take away some of the hitter's bat speed.

The way a bat feels is very important. That is where balance comes in. Is the weight concentrated or spread out over the whole baseball bat? If the weight is more towards the knob, it can make the bat feel like you have more control. But on the other hand, if you have more of the weight in the barrel, it can give you a quicker bat, which will increase the velocity of the ball as it leaves the bat. A happy medium is what you want to look for.

The all important "pop" is what most players are worried about. When I really hit it good, is it going to fly? Even more notable, what about when I miss-hit it? Brand new baseball bat regulations have made this piece not quite as important. Most of the BBCOR bats are going to perfrom just like the others. But, in other leagues that don't use the BBCOR, it is important to really look at this feature.

Of course, kids don't typically care about the durability of a bat, but moms and dads absolutely do! How many seasons is this bat going to last? Will I get multiple seasons out of it? A few models of bats are infamous for breaking. It is vital to weed out what brands those are.

We want to look good out on the field, right? Bat makers nowadays know this better than anybody else. They put a lot of effort in making their bats stand out in a crowd. What bat fits your style? Do you like loud, colorful graphics or would you rather have a more subdued look? Do not decide on the bat on this alone, though. Walking back to the dugout with a nice looking bat never makes anyone look good!
