Family Holidays - How To Break The Norm

By Ambrose Trevelyan

Many people's idea of a family holidays don't stray too far away from a week or fortnight in Spain staying by the hotel pool and perhaps going to the beach for a day if you're lucky. While some are perfectly content with such a holiday, many families are looking for something just a little bit different. It doesn't take an unlimited bank balance to provide your family with something out of the ordinary.

Many parents think their children won't enjoy a few days in a city seeing the cultural landmarks on offer, but this is far from the reality. You'd be surprised how many children would be thrilled to have the opportunity to climb the Eiffel Tower or to learn about the Louvre. Combining this with a day or two at Disney Land can make for a varied trip encompassing fun, culture and education.

Another great holiday idea is skiing - something that many people consider too expensive. Many of the best skiing destinations are in Europe, and many are cheaper than you'd expect. Furthermore, affordable, quality skiing equipment can easily be bought or hired. If you're all beginners you'll probably find that the kids pick it up faster than mum and dad, but it's fun for all. And unlike holidays where you're sitting around not doing much apart from eating and drinking, you're much more likely to lose than gain weight.

For a family holiday that is still adventurous if a little less exhaustive and cold, a safari is ideal. Children and adults alike will be stunned by the range of wildlife they come across during the safari, while mum and dad may be happy that they are still able to work on their tan. There are numerous wildlife reserves and accommodation types to suit all budgets making a holiday at a safari park a great decision for an alternative holiday.

There is so much available to families these days that a week on the beach is no longer the only option for a summer holiday. Whether you choose to go camping, skiing, on safari or whatever else, there are plenty of alternative things for families to get up to during the summer holiday months.
