Aluminum Rifle Cases vs Soft Firearms Cases

By Shannon L. Hilson

Have you noticed the trend towards aluminum rifle cases today? Why are so many gun owners switching to them? Smart gun owners use aluminum gun cases because they care about their firearms and want to ensure they are always kept in tip-top shape. Wise gun owners know that their guns can be very dangerous if not treated with the proper respect. There are so many reasons for choosing aluminum over soft cases, it's amazing that anyone at all stores a weapon in a soft case.

Purely from a practical standpoint, aluminum rifle cases stand head and shoulders above all other types of cases for rifles. Rifles are tough, but in order to keep them in pristine condition year after year, you need to keep them clean, dry and protected from hard knocks. Aluminum gun cases do all of these things for your rifle. The casing cannot absorb water, even through tiny cracks in the seams between the lid and the base. Dust doesn't have a chance of getting in and the high density foam interior lining cushions the rifle against impact.

Now consider what you get with a case made from a soft material. Even if the label says it is made from water-resistant or waterproof material, experience will show you that while the material may be waterproof, the seams and zippers are not. Who is to say that you won't be out in the woods hunting when a sudden rain storm comes? If you've ever been out camping and used a "waterproof tent," you already know that water can and does find its way into the tent. The same thing is true of soft cases, but not aluminum rifle cases.

Now that you have thought about it, it's perfectly obvious that soft cases can't hold a candle to aluminum rifle cases, isn't it. All you have to do is think about all that can happen when you're out hunting and it becomes clear that aluminum gun cases are far better than soft ones. If a soft case is dropped or accidentally bashes against a boulder or a tree, the firearm inside it is going to bear the brunt of the hit. If a scope is attached to the weapon, even a modest blow like that can knock it out of alignment, making it less than useless. No sharpshooter would ever be negligent with his scoped rifle. He would always keep it safely stored and protected from even the slightest damage.

Of course, you can't take your rifle out and use it nearly as often as you would like to. Is there any good reason why you should store firearms in aluminum rifle cases when they are not needed for travel?

When a rifle is not being used by you, it must be stored in such a way that others cannot get to it. Aluminum rifle cases can be locked securely so that nobody can use your gun when you're not around. Soft cases provide no security at all against unwanted access to your firearms, while aluminum gun cases provide a great deal of security.

Can you think of a single reason why you would purchase a soft firearm case? You can't, can you? What about price? Can you afford to buy high quality aluminum rifle cases? Yes, you can. They are very cheap and because they are so tough, they last longer than soft cases, too.
