Important Facts About CNC Parts

By Rosella Campbell

Like any other machine, a CNC system relies on its component parts in order to function effectively. Simply put, a CNC system is a machine that is computer controlled and designed for manufacturing. It uses programs and instructions to undertake a sequence of machining functions. When shopping for their ideal machinery, many people often consider the whole system alone. However, to be able to procure the most suited, effective and fault tolerant equipment, ensure to consider its component parts. Below are some important CNC parts that are worth considering.

The part program is an important segment of the machine. The part contains instructions that are coded into programs. The instructions are particularly for the control of auxiliary functions and regulation of the machine tool for movements. Some auxiliary functions that are controlled by the part include the coolant alongside spindle rotation. The instructions are in the form of letters and symbols.

The machine also has a program input device. The function of this device is to enable the part program to be entered in to CNC control. There are three most common program input devices and include; the punch tape reader, the computer, and magnetic tape reader. They are achieved via RS-232-C communication.

The most important element is the machine control unit. It is compared to the brain in the nervous system. It controls virtually everything in the system. For example, the component is responsible decoding the instructions into useful meanings and does all dimensional interpolations to achieve axis motion commands. The commands from the unit are then strengthened via an amplifier so as to drive the axis structure.

The machine has a drive system, composed of the ball lead screws, drive motors and the amplifier connection. The circuit of the drive system amplifies the speed and position control signals from the machine control unit. On amplification, the control signals are triggered to drive the motors which drive the ball lead screws and ultimately position the machine table.

There are also a variety of machine tools that are controlled by the CNC controls. The machine tool has a spindle and slide table that regulates speed and position. On one hand, the machine table is regulated along the X and Y axes, whereas the spindle operates in the Z axis.

Feedback is provided by a measuring system that forms an essential segment of the device. To be able to relay the feedback, this segment relies on the speed and position elements in monitoring the cutting tool at any given time and place. It relies on the gap between the feedback and reference signals to come up with a control signal for the regulation of errors in speed and position.

Simply put, the individual elements making up a system are more important as far as the entire system is concerned. There is no part in a system that can stand alone and thus some analysis ought to be done for configuration. The spares must configure and be compatible with both the hardware and software of the entire collection.
