By Sharron Cantu

There are quite a few good reasons to go north of British Columbia and spend your vacation. One of the many destinations you can go to is the island archipelago of Haida Gwaii. This article covers some possible ways for you to take advantage of Haida Gwaii adventure tours and travel packages.

Since the area is an archipelago, or rather a group of islands, there is plenty to be had if one is thinking of activities relating to water. This area is well known primarily for the great experience of watching whales up close the whole year round.

Depending on the month or season, one will be able to see a variety of whale species up close when taking a whale watching tour. Species one will most likely see are orcas or killer whales, humpbacks and gray whales. On rare occasions all these species can be seen together in one spot.

There are plenty of fun and interesting things to do on land as well. One can go camping or fishing on any one of the many islands. Kayaking as well as hiking and biking can be enjoyed as well, particularly in the mornings, and ending the day with some light browsing and swimming at the beach. This is what most of the more seasoned visitors do when they are on the islands.

Should one want to learn more about the local culture and populace as well, there is always plenty of things to do and partake in. The Haida are a very friendly people and are more than happy to share their history and culture with you. To make things more interesting perhaps you should also read into their local culture and traditions before you make the trip, so you can avoid the most common and embarrassing questions that a tourist would ask any local.

A visit to areas with totem poles will enlighten you more about the history of the people there. Each of the totem poles represent one family and each totem shows the family history. These totems are quite similar in design and stature as those found in the Alaskan regions as the Haida are also inhabitants of these regions.

It will take almost four days to completely immerse yourself in the local culture and history if one wants to visit every single community in the archipelago. Some communities have a local museum one can visit and most have local arts and crafts stores one can browse through. Here you can also see the origin of the bent wood techniques that they have created and perfected and is a mainstay in most Indian cultures in North America.

Should you wish to visit this hidden getaway, it is just a two hour flight from Toronto. One can also get to this place by boat or ferry if one decides to take the more scenic route. Either way the journey is very much worth it. Many travel agents now offer this experience for most to enjoy. Just be aware of the peak and off peak seasons so that you will be able to get the best deals that will not hurt your pocket.
