Try San Pedro Belize Rentals For A Piece Of Paradise

By Imelda Reid

Read almost any list of top idyllic island destinations and chances are that Ambergris Caye is on it. Also dubbed 'La Isla Bonita', this is the place that Madonna sings about in her popular hit from the Eighties. If you want to hum along while feeling the island breeze in your hair, all you need to do is to check out some San Pedro Belize rentals online and then buy your ticket to paradise.

San Pedro is Ambergis Caye's main town, located in the southern part of the island. Once a quiet little fishing village, it is now one of the most popular towns in Belize, if not in the entire Caribbean. Even though tourism has led to development and growth, it hasn't erased the Caribbean flavor or relaxed small-town atmosphere of this idyllic little settlement.

The main attraction of Ambergris Caye is the coral reefs that surround the island. Divers from all over the world come to swim with the stingrays of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. If you don't know how to scuba dive, one of the local dive shops will be happy to show you the ropes and help you get certification. Otherwise, simply rent some snorkeling gear and explore the reef a stone's throw from town.

The island's beaches are beautiful and white but are normally quite narrow. Luckily there are piers jutting out into the water every hundred yards or so and you're sure to find the perfect spot for kicking back and relaxing by the water's edge. Cool down by taking a dip in the crystalline water and if you want some activity, try out some of the many water-sports on offer, including windsurfing. You may also want to charter a boat for a bit of sailing or fishing.

San Pedro makes a great base from where to explore the many wonders of Belize. Great ideas for day trips include visiting the spectacular Blue Hole or going to Caye Caulkner for a lunch of fresh lobster. If you have a couple of days to spare, you may want to explore the Mayan ruins or go trekking in the wildlife sanctuaries on the mainland.

Even though San Pedro is small, it has all the amenities a visitor may want. There's a huge selection of restaurants and you'll also find plenty of supermarkets and shops where you can stock up on provisions if you'd rather self-cater. The nightlife is bustling pretty much every night of the week and beachside bars are just the place to go to quench your thirst with a rum-based cocktail.

There are two main options for getting to Ambergris Caye. One is to fly in from Belize City, since the island has a small airstrip. More popular though is to take a boat from one of several other destinations in the country. Because of the subtropical climate, there is no bad time to visit. However, conditions are most comfortable in the first three months of the year, which is why this is high season.

Ambergris Caye has many accommodation options and for a longer stay, it's well worth renting an apartment, a house or a villa. You don't even have to bring a phrase book when you visit, since English is the official language of Belize. However, you'll be able to get by with Spanish too and most San Pedranos also speak Kriol, adding an exotic touch to your holiday in paradise.
