The early history of Delray Beach reveals this portion of land that is now among the most valued in Florida had no recorded human activities till 1870s when the then governor of Florida by the name William Gleason and his wife bought some land from the southeast of Florida. The construction of the Orange Grove House of refugees by the United States of American Life-Saving Services in 1876 marks the major interest of people in this land. The Orange Grove was constructed to act as a rescue house for the victims from the shipwreck in the nearby ocean.
The major economic activity started by the interests of some refugees of African-American decent in farming at the west of the Grove House of Refugees in 1884. This attracted the attention of Henry Flagler who together with his team built a railway station for East Coast Railroad Company which was completed in 1896.
