Collectible Fishing Lures Are Catching On

By Marsha Klein

There are a great many hobbies out there that people get involved in. Sometimes people start with a hobby because of a family connection and sometimes they are just looking for something that appeals to them. The reasons people do these things are as varied as the people doing it. Collectible fishing lures is much the same way.

There is a rich and storied history behind the sport. People have been fishing in various ways for a great many years. It goes back through the generations. Live bait was also not the only way that people caught fish either. It was not a stretch to figure out that you could catch fish with artificial lures.

The people who collect these baits sometimes travel all over the world to locate a certain lure that might have been made over a hundred years ago. It is amazing how far back these can go. There are many people out there who did not even realize that fishing was that old, let alone the artificial baits that the anglers used.

Just like any other hobby or collectible out there the people who are doing this all have their own reasons. Some people do it because they remember their grandfather who used to take them fishing on the weekends. Still others do it because they remember taking their kids. For everyone who does it there is a new and different story as to why they do it.

Once they found out that it was artificial and that he made it himself they wanted him to make one for them. It sounds like a very simple story but it is just how some of these companies started. After a while they needed more and more people to keep up with demand and then a larger and larger company was put in its place. Such is the story of many great American companies.

Considering the beating that some of these took it does surprise people to see that so many have made it so far and in such good condition. On the other hand it is just as surprising to see how many of the real old lures look just like the ones from today. They might have been made from very different materials but they they could look very similar.

These baits were made in the past from wood and various other materials. One of the most surprising factors about the older ones is the amount of hooks that were put on each one. Sometimes as many as 7 to 10 hooks were used on some of the larger ones. Today a bait of the same type would only have three hooks. That is a huge difference.

Collectible fishing lures have been around for a very long time and they will continue to be around for a very long time. The numbers of people who are fishing today has remained fairly steady for many years. The sport has survived the great depression and many other disasters and will continue to do so. Fishing will remain a popular sport for young and old alike.
