Simple Tricks To Make Your Move An Easy One

By Joyce McIntosh

Let's face it, while we might love the idea of a new home, the idea of packing up all of our belongings, find moving and dealing with all the little details keeps many people from making a move. It doesn't have to be this way, however, and you can simplify a move by using a few of these handy helpful relocation tips.

When people feel overwhelmed, they tend to avoid doing anything. But rather than become paralyzed with stress, just take a deep breath, grab paper and pen and create a comprehensive list with all the tasks that need to be accomplished during the moving process. No detail is too big or too small, from selecting the movers to ensuring that you return sledgehammer you borrowed from your next door neighbor in 1997. Grab a file folder, too, and put the list inside the folder with other important moving documents.

Packing is not something you want to leave until the last minute. In fact, as soon as you are sure that the move is happening, get some boxes (lots of them) and packing materials and get to work. Make it a priority to pack up stuff every night and on the weekends. The sooner you start, the easier it will be. Organize boxes by color so that each color represents the room where the box should be moved in the new house. A box with red ink goes into the family room, purple goes into the kitchen and so on.

Pack a special bag for each person in your family and load it up with three days worth of supplies, including shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries. Don't forget about prescriptions or medicines such as ibuprofen or aspirin. Also pack items your young child might need, such as their favorite stuffed animal or the baby blanket without which they cannot sleep. It's important that you put these items in your car on moving day to ensure that the moving company employees don't accidentally packed them in the truck. Also, fill a cooler with bottled water, soft drinks and snacks so that you don't have to run out and grab food during the day.

Don't be shy about asking friends and family for help and if anyone asks if they can help, take them up on the offer. If they can't actually help you move items, perhaps they can keep pets and children for the day so that you don't have to worry about them. Having a packing party and treat your friends or family to some dinner, snacks or wine as they help you tackle the chores. After you are all moved in and unpacked, invite everyone over and serve a big dinner or perhaps offer to babysit so they can have a night out or pass out gift cards to people who helped out.

Sometimes you need to store some or all of your belongings before your move-in date at the new place. Many moving companies provide storage at an extra charge, but it's often less expensive and more convenient to store your belongings at a secure self-storage facility. Not only do some mini storage companies offer low-cost weekly and monthly rental options, you can find facilities that also allow access to your unit at any time, night or day. When renting a storage unit, don't forget to ask if there are discounts for military, seniors and students.
